The Good old days when everything was paper

With all these new technological advances people are leaving behind physical material versions of things like books and maps. In maritime world nautical charts and maps are now electronic and with the use of GPS and radar navigation mainly electronic. On the visit to Maine Maritime Academy, we planned a course that we were to take the next day using nautical maps of the area since it was new and unfamiliar to us. We had to locate 8 waypoints using a compass and parallel ruler. Knowing how to find how to get to places, or your position out on the water while underway using paper maps is a crucial skill. Although we have GPS, easier ways can fail or get hacked or be incorrectly calibrated because electronics can have bugs. If this happens, you should be confident in your ability to find your location.
