Class with the Coast Guard

It’s not everyday that high school students get the chance to end up working with such talented people like the ones from the Coast Guard. Being in the New York Harbor School, we are brought so many cool and new opportunities all the time. This being one of the best one of them all. Some people from the USCG decided to come down and hold their own class with some of the Vessel Operation Students. This really opened my eyes when it came to my thought of ever working in the maritime business or in a maritime related job in general. The people that were there when we were working with them showed us that they really did love their jobs. They also helped us go through one of the drills that we even do at school. We did a Man Overboard Drill, and it was one of the most fun things we had done that day. That’s because the people that were there were almost surprised that we had known how to do it, even after we told them that we’ve done those drills before. Also that day we were able to take turns driving their boat up and down in the harbor, it was really cool because I’ve never driven a boat that felt that way or was as fast as that. Also during that week we were able to go to the Coast Guard Center in Staten Island. That was probably the coolest part of the week especially after seeing so many things that I’ve never seen before. Also seeing things that I have, like Navigation Charts and people cleaning boats. I’m truly grateful for having been given a chance to do this and I can’t wait to be given a chance soon hopefully.

Thank You Coast Guard!
