Samuel E. Barnes

1915-1997

Barnes was one of the first thirteen black men to be chosen for integration into the US Navy. Barnes and the Golden Thirteen (first black men to join the Navy) aren’t heard of very often and have little awareness spread about them. After curiously searching for who the first black Navy officers were, I stumbled onto Barnes who contributed to breaking the color barrier of the Navy.
