Tara Roberts

Tara roberts is a black writer, story teller, and explorer who has made a crazy contribution to the maritime industry by helping uncover and share the history of shipwrecks of slaveships that are connected to the slave trade. Tara Roberts had worked with blacked scuba divers and they were called Diving With A Purpose who search for and study ships that sank while carrying enslaved Africans. By her telling these stories through websites and podcasts, people learn about a big part of the maritime industry that was ignored. Her work also encourages diversity in ocean exploration and maritime research. Because of all of this she was named the 2022 Rolex Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year and became the first Black woman explorer to appear on the cover of National Geographic magazine.

Tara Roberts inspires me because she shows that anyone can make a difference by exploring history and sharing important stories. As a black explorer and writer, she helps bring attention to shipwrecks connected to slave trade, and work with diversity to uncover parts of the maritime history that many people do not know or care about. Her work teaches people about the past and honors souls who are affected by it. She inspires me because she’s brave, curious, strong and determined to learn more about the ocean and its history of helping other people understand it too.
